Evaluating the environmental impact of Digital Technologies: The IEN Project and Teclib’

The IEN (Environmental Impact of Digital Technology) project, launched by IRT SystemX, aims to develop tools to assess the environmental impact of digital technologies. This 36-month project involves major players like Airbus Protect, Teclib’, Total Energies, AFNIC and CentraleSupélec to create standardized evaluation methods.

Objectives of the IEN Project

IEN aims to provide a systemic approach to evaluate the direct and indirect environmental impacts of digital systems, offering standardized indicators based on the full life cycle of digital components.

The role of Teclib’

Teclib’ contributes with its expertise in managing the environmental impact of digital services and software. Its experience in sustainable development and open-source software helps create decision-making tools based on environmental and economic criteria.

Methodology and implementation

IEN’s comprehensive approach includes:

– Defining valuation rules for environmental impacts of physical components at each life cycle stage.

– Creating a decision-making tool for technological choices and data processing methods.

– Sharing a systemic diagnostic guide on environmental impacts with the scientific community, along with training solutions to raise awareness among digital stakeholders.

Perspectives and contributions

Drawing on research from the PSE (Paris-Saclay Energies) project and the CircularIT alliance, IEN promotes the circular economy and ecological transition. Expected outcomes include a common framework and methodology for industries, local authorities, and suppliers to facilitate more sustainable technological choices.

The IEN project is a significant step towards rigorous and standardized evaluation of the environmental impact of digital technologies. With partners like Teclib’, this project aims to provide valuable tools for adopting more environmentally friendly digital practices and supporting the transition to a circular economy.
